The
History
of
Adam B. Hackenberg
by
Robert Earl Hackenberg
Lazarus Hackenberg and Susanna Wallenberg were married 13 May 1828 in Stark County, Ohio, according to the More Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, Film # 0897628.After their marriage, they settled on the family farm, that Lazarus= father, Michael, had purchased from the American Government. The amount of land purchased was 160 acres. It took place on 24 August 1827, according to a deed signed by President John Quincy Adams. This is recorded in the Record of Deeds Volume 8, Pages 181-82 at the Wooster Courthouse. Before Michael died he and his wife Mary, sold 50 acres of this land to their son, Lazarus. This meant that at Michael’s death, he only owned 110 acres of land. He bequeathed equal shares of this land to his children. The distribution of theses equal shares caused the farm to be divided. Fear not Lazarus comes to the rescue. He purchased his brother=s and sister=s shares. By 1866 all 160 acres of the land was once more united under one owner, page 481 of Johann Peter Hachenberg and Descendants.
It was on this farm, located in Chippewa Township Wayne County, Ohio, that Susanna gave birth to Adam. He was the sixth child of Lazarus and Susanna. The date of his birth was 14 August 1844. Adam lived to be 68 years, 11 months and 3 days. Then on 17 July 1913, he died. During his lifetime, Adam owned the farm that he was born on. When he owned the farm, it wasn’t as big as it was at the time of his birth. He lived on this farm all of his life, and his occupation was that of a farmer. The information in this paragraph was taken from his Death Certificate, and The History of Wayne County, Volume 2, Pages 1453-54. Adam did not move around like his great-grandfather, Peter Hachenberg, Bob Hackenberg.
Adam, as was as all of his brothers and sisters, was born on the farm, that his grandfather, Michael, purchased from the American Government. The records of his birth and death are from his marker at High Church Cemetery and the records of the caretaker, Mr. Calvin Tritt.
Adam was almost 57, when Adaline died. At the time of his death in 1913, he was 69.1
Services for Adam's funeral were held at High Street M. E Church of Barberton.1 This church is located right across the street from Portage Elementary School. It is now named St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Barberton.1a
I have taken Adam=s obituary from the Barberton Leader dated 1 August 1913 page one of the article reads as follows:
The funeral service of Adam Hackenburg, a former resident of this place, were held at the High Church, Sunday morning, July 20, conducted by Rev. H. M. Hancock, of the High Street M. E. church of Barberton. Mr. Hackenburg was well known among the people of the community. He leaves a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn his loss. Internment was made in High church cemetery. (According to Adeline's obituary, she was a member of this church. It is reasonable to assume Adam was also a member. Their marriage probably took place here. Rev. D. Rothacker officiated at the wedding, according to the wedding certificate. The cemetery is located where Eastern Road and Medina County Line Road come together. It used to be the German Reformed Church, but it is now the Emmanuel United Church of Christ. The address is 16 Eastern Road -- Chippewa, Township 44230.)
A brief biography of Adam is listed below:
Adam Hackenberg
From sterling pioneer ancestors comes Adam Hackenberg, a thrifty farmer in Chippewa Township, Wayne County. He was born on the farm that he now owns on 14 August 1844. Mr. Hackenberg is the son of Lazarus and Susan (Wallenberg or Waltenberger) Hackenberg. His paternal grandparents, Michael and Elizabeth Hackenberg, were natives of Pennsylvania. They came to Ohio in a very early day and located in Wayne County. (This was around 1825 according to the Heber G. Gearhart Collection. In her genealogy records Mildred Cleary Hackenberg lists them as stopping in North Hill before they went to Wayne County. North Hill is in Akron, Ohio.) There, (Wayne County) they entered land from the government. They cleared it up, making a home for themselves in the midst of the forest. Here they both lived and died. The maternal grandparents of Mr. Hackenberg were natives of Pennsylvania. It was here, that they lived until there deaths many years ago.
Lazarus Hackenberg, father of Adam, was born in the state of Pennsylvania, 15 February 1800.1 He came to Wayne County when a boy with his parents, if you consider 25 a boy. Adam's mother was born in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania about 1803-1805. She too came to Ohio when young. There she met and married Mr. Hackenberg. The latter was a carpenter by trade. He followed this profession for many years in his immediate vicinity. He later gave his entire attention to farming. At the time of his death, he owned 160 acres of land. Mr. Hackenberg (Lazarus) lived a comparatively quiet life. He was prominent in the affairs of the Mennonite Church. He and his wife were the parents of three sons and three daughters, who grew to maturity. They had three children who died in infancy. Out of this number, only three are now living, two daughters and Adam, of this review.
Adam Hackenberg was educated in the common school of his native community, district Number 1. He was reared on the farm and worked there. He did so from the time that he was very young. About 1888, he purchased seventy-seven and three-fourths acres of the old homestead. At the present time, he owns only sixty acres of this land. He sold some of the land to his son. Mr. Hackenberg has carried on diversified (different forms of) farming and always made a comfortable living. He was married to Adaline Adams, a native of Wayne County. She is the daughter of John Adams, who was an old settler here. Adam was nineteen, and Adaline was eighteen at the time of the marriage. Lazarus had to give his consent for the marriage to take place. This union has resulted in the birth of thirteen children namely: Alice (Sadie), William, John, Mary, Arthur, Clara, Samuel, George (killed in a coal mine), Mattie, Bertha R., Della May (died in infancy), Frederick Nelson (died in infancy) and Grover (died in infancy). In Adam's will a fourteenth child is listed. The child is listed as baby in the High Church Cemetery Records. The mother of these children died on 10 January 1901. Mr. Hackenberg never re-married
In politics, he is a Republican and a member of the Chippewa Township Farmers Club. Mr. Hackenberg and his wife belong to the Lutheran Church. (I was wondering how he could be active in the Mennonite Church and be a member of the Lutheran Church. I went to the Lutheran Church in Marshallville. About a half a block from it is a Mennonite Church).1 b
Some changes were made for grammar reasons. That is all.
Adam died of Nodular Cancer of the Liver.1 c His residence at the time of death was 730 Bowery Street, Akron, Ohio.1 c The date for Adam and Adeline's marriage was taken from the Wayne County Marriage Licenses. The ceremony was conducted by D. Rothacker, Minister.
The 1880 Ohio Census list=s Lazarus as being 80 and Susannah as being 79. At that time, they were living with their son Adam.
Adeline was born 19 September 1842.1d Twenty-two years later on 1 December 1864 Adam married her.2 The marriage took place in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio. The minister was D. Rothacker.3 Adeline was the daughter of John Adams.4 She died 10 January 1901.5
Hametown Woman
A short sketch of her useful life
Hametown, January 14 -- Mrs. Adeline Adams Hackenberg was born near Doylestown, September 10, 1842 (her grave marker says 19 September 1842.) and died January 10, 1901, aged 58 years and four months. On the first of November 1864, she was united in marriage to Adam Hackenberg, and to them were born thirteen children, ten of whom are living and were present at the funeral. For the last thirteen years the deceased was an active Christian woman, being a member of the Lutheran Congregation of the High Church. The last year her health did not permit her to attend services regularly. Besides the ten children, a husband and twenty grandchildren are left to mourn their loss. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the High Church. Rev. Etterly, a former pastor, of the High Church preached a very impressive sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the church.
This information was taken from the January 16, 1901 issue of the Akron Beacon Journal. It is column 8, page 8.
It might be interesting to comment Adeline was two years older than Adam. Adeline was the mother of thirteen children. Her father was John Adams. Here is a brief biography of him.
"John Q. Adams, one of the oldest settlers and well known citizens of Chippewa, Township, Wayne County, Ohio was born in Ann Arundel County, Maryland, 9 April 1800. He is the son of William Adams and Elizabeth Zepp Adams. The former is of English parentage the latter of German. They were pioneers of Jefferson County, Ohio, where William Adams resided until his death. His widow, Elizabeth, died at the age of ninety-one years at the residence of their son John Q. Adams (1800) in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio. Our subject, John Q. Adams, was reared in Jefferson County, Ohio. At the age of eighteen, he was apprenticed to the blacksmith's trade. There he served for two and one half years in Steubenville, Ohio.
In 1823 Mr. Adams traded a tract of land in Pennsylvania for 160 acres in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio, on which he settled the same year. Three days after his arrival, he had erected and started a blacksmith's shop, where he worked at his trade steadily for four years. He then gave his attention to making axes and other edge tools.
Mr. Adams was married in 1820 to Mary LLewellyn of Washington County, Pennsylvania, by whom he had nine children who grew to maturity. They are William, Thomas, George, Sarah J., Mary A., Rachael A., Adeline, John and Elizabeth.
Although Mr. Adams is in his ninetieth year, he is remarkably strong and active, and bids fair to live to celebrate his one hundredth birthday. For over 40 years he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, though he is not now connected with any denomination. He has held various local offices in his township and is a staunch Democrat--Ft. Wayne Indiana Library on Wayne County, Ohio, and Page 499.
The above was also taken from a letter written by Hazel Dohner Janke 22 August 1974.
Returning to Adam, his obituary list=s the children the Lord gave to Adeline and himself. I would like to list each of them in order according to birth. Before I do let me say three of them died young. They are as follows: Frederic Nelson, Grover Willman and Idella May. The children according to birth are as follows: Sarah Alice Hackenberg, She was born 21 July 1865.6 Sadie married Quintas Albright.7 Sarah Alice along with her husband Quintas is buried at High Church Cemetery on Eastern Road. Her parents are also buried there.8 William Citrus Hackenberg, He was born 26 September 1867.9 William married Ada Mae Baughman.10 John Daniel Hackenberg, He was born 15 June 1869 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio, USA. In the 1900 and 1910 Ohio Census, he and his family lived in Barberton. The address was Wooster Road, Norton Township, Summit County, Ohio. John was married to a lady by the name of Emma E. He died 27 June 1937 and was buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Summit County, Akron, Ohio, USA. The date of the internment was 30 June 1937.11 Mary Susan Hackenberg, She was born 25 February 1871 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio, USA.12 Mary married Mr. William Grill.13 Arthur Allen Hackenberg, He was born 25 September 1872 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio, USA.14 Great Grandfather had two wives. The first was Cora Burgner and the second was Iva Hawsman. My great grandmother is Cora Burgner. After living a long life, grandfather died 21 March 1932. He is buried at Lakewood Cemetery with his wife Cora. The date that he was buried is 4 March 1932.15 Samuel Araspus Hackenberg, He was born 17 March 1874 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio, USA .16 He and his wife Mary lived in Akron on Wooster Avenue, Summit County, Ohio, USA.17 Mildred Cleary Hackenberg=s 1982 Hackenberg Family Reunion Records gives 10 December 1940 as the date of his death. He died in the Summit County Home.18 George Lemuel Hackenberg, He was born 21 September 1875 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio, USA .19 George was involved in a coal accident. That accident killed him. This was before his father died in 1913. George Hackenberg is buried in Doylestown, Chestnut Cemetery. The date of his death was November 8, 1905.20 At the time. he was thirty years old.21 George had been married to his wife Mell for twelve years.22
There is another account of George given in the Doylestown Newspaper. The following is that account.
The Doylestown Journal Hochstetlor editor December 27, 1894
A petition, asking the governor to recommend George Hackenberg for pardon is being circulated here and has been signed by a large number of prominent citizens. Hackenberg was sent to the penitentiary from Tuscarawas County for larceny.
The larceny he committed is as follows: AWhile visiting relatives near New Philadelphia, he broke open a trunk and appropriated $60.00 to his own use. He was arrested and taken to New Philadelphia where he pleaded guilty and was given a one year sentence. On being arrested, he refunded all of the money but a few dollars, Hackenberg is about 18 years old and married. His wife being the same age. Under existing circumstances, it would be well for the governor to recommend him for a pardon, as the lesson already has been a severe one.@
When George died in the accident, he left his two sons Adam and Foster. They are listed in their grandfather=s will to receive George=s part of the estate. Clara Vianna Hackenberg, She was born 17 September 1877 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio, USA.23 Clara married Gregory V. Kavelaris.24 Mr. Kavelaris was born in Sparta, Greece.25 Frederic Nelson Hackenberg, He was born 6 April 1879. He was five years, seven months and twenty-one days old when he died.26 The date of his death was 27 November 1884.27Mattie Rosella Hackenberg, She was born 11 October 1880.28 Mattie married John James Lewis.29 Idella May Hackenberg, She was born 17 January 1883 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio, USA.30 Mattie died in infancy. The date was 7 December 1884. The age at the time of death was one year, ten months and twenty days old.31 Grover Willman Hackenberg, He was born 5 May 1886 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio, USA.32 Grover died in infancy. The date was 27 August 1886.33 His death was the result of Cholera.34 The age at the time of death was three months and twenty-two days.35Bertha Rebecca Hackenberg, She was born 18 December 1889 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio, USA.36 For some reason Aunt Bertha is not recorded in her mother=s birth records. The only reason that I can think of is that she was not born at the time of the writing.37She married Harry Schley.38
I was able to obtain Adam=s Last Will and Testament. It is filed in Probate Court in Summit County, Ohio. The number of the will is 411584. It reads as follows:

In Adam=s will there is no mention of the farm, that Michael purchased from the American Government. However, I believe, that he sold some of it to his son, Arthur. Adam=s son George was killed in a coal accident in 1905. His sons’ Adam and Foster are mentioned in the will.
My line is continued through Adam=s son, Arthur.
